I have been quiet the last two months. I had some traction with interviews in January and February, plus I landed a client and started a contract role. It was a big shift from blocking my days into studying, applying, learning, and building side projects, into real paid work in addition to what I was already doing. I definitely felt prepared, but there were some times where I had multiple interviews in a week and scheduling everything felt hectic. My client site should be launching very soon and I'm very excited for it! It's been nice to also work on a team for this contract gig working as a Shopify dev.
I've said this before, but I believe every company is a tech company now. Everyone needs a website. Everyone needs some kind of internal tooling or application for their users. And I feel like even though I didn't have Shopify experience before, knowing how I learn and utilizing all the great resources out there, I'm super confident I can pick up anything. I've definitely fallen into the trap of trying to learn a new language or framework for a specific role. And although I don't think the effort was wasted per se, I definitely could have spent my time a little more wisely. I'm just not sure how to convey to recruiters and potential employers that even though I don't have a specific language on my resume yet, or I don't check a particular box, I know I can pick it up. I keep proving it to myself over and over again.
Shopify has been interesting. The whole ecosystem is large and there are lots of options, but right now I'm just contributing in a front-end capacity, editing and creating Liquid themes. Our team has also pushed for the use of Claude Code to maximize our time, output, and really just accelerate the dev process in general. There are so many AI tools out there, and I know I've just scratched the surface, but Claude has really stood out as a top contender for me, especially when it comes to code. I read all about people creating personal agents and personal software, and I might get there eventually but I still like to manually control all the lights in my house and I'm not about to give agents free reign over my email or bank account.
Here's to the rest of March, picking up more interviews, sending in more quality applications, networking, and gaining traction with contract gigs. Cheerio! ☘️
